Understanding Trauma

.

The psychological, emotional or mental trauma is an exceptional psychological situation, often rooted in a deep emotional injury . Triggers are overwhelming events such as childhood abuse, acts of violence, experiences of war or catastrophes that those affected perceive as a threat to their own lives or physical integrity. Similar situations that did not affect the person concerned, but people close to him, trigger trauma.

In my practice in Mainz, I ask clients to go back in time and get to know the trauma as it occurred and track it’s development. Such a trauma occurs when, as a child, we do not receive what we need for healthy development, for example security and a lasting emotional connection. The psychological injury that results limits our existence.

Trauma controls our experience in the here and now, often without us being aware of it. Trauma healing is possible when we bring what happened into our consciousness and process it.

Trauma patients experience a discrepancy between a threatening event they have experienced and their individual ability to process it. Thus, trauma differs from adjustment disorders , which are triggered by unpleasant but non-threatening events. In post-traumatic stress disorder, the triggering event is far in the past and there is no current threat.

.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

.

Typical symptoms are a repeated, unavoidable recollection of what has happened or the compulsive preoccupation with the event . Specific key stimuli, or triggers, recall the traumatic event.

Compartmentalised emotions lead to strongly felt destabilising impulses make self-regulation difficult. Getting to the bottom of these and recognising them as symptoms of trauma is the first step.

During the diagnostic process, attention must be paid to whether other mental disorders such as depression are present. The therapist must also rule out the presence of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, diseases that require medication.

.

OVERCOMING TRAUMA

.

In my practice in Mainz, I support you in actively dealing with what you have experienced. Together we confront what has been repressed, with the goal of developing new processing strategies. In trauma therapy, a good deal of trust between therapist and client is an important component.

I also teach methods such as breathing techniques or thought stops so that the patient learns to see through his fear. In the context of trauma therapy, those affected must also learn to modify destructive thoughts and shed feelings of guilt.

Often, my psychotherapy begins by teaching patients the skill of self-regulation. Differentiating between triggered reactions and experiencing the here and now are first steps.

Your questions about trauma

.

Trauma occurs when a person feels unable to process a frightening experience. It is usually extreme events such as serious accidents, illnesses and natural disasters that lead to trauma. Individual experiences can also trigger trauma, for example psychological, physical or sexual violence.

A trauma is an extreme stress that can leave traces in the brain. The stress-processing system is overwhelmed. This leads to typical peritraumatic symptoms such as nightmares, intense fear or numbness. This is a normal reaction to an extraordinary event which leads to changes in the psyche. Those affected can try to detach themselves from the experience with therapeutic help.

Those affected will try to process the trauma by themselves and sometimes symptoms often disappear, due to self healingself-healing. But if restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, and similar effects do not improve over time, you need therapeutic help. Trying to cope alone can result is a loss of quality of life and relationships and professional progress can suffer.
