Treatment of panic attacks

.

Shortness of breath, tachycardia, dizziness, sweating, tremors and fearful thoughts – these are some symptoms of a panic attack, which is not dangerous, but usually disappears again after a short time. This physical and mental alarm reaction originally served to provide energy and thus survival.

For most sufferers, the panic comes out of nowhere. Especially nocturnal panic attacks are threatening; the heart is beating strongly, you can’t fall asleep anymore, thinking that something bad is going to happen. Psychotherapeutic treatment teaches you how to deal with panic attacks and how to eliminate them in the long term.

.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

.

Typical symptoms such as sweating, trembling and palpitations suddenly appear out of nowhere. They are often accompanied by shortness of breath and chest pain, so many sufferers fear suffering a heart attack. Such panic attacks may be due to trauma.

Diagnosis therefore involves getting to the bottom of the cause and, above all, ruling out purely physical factors, such as heart disease. Diseases of the respiratory tract or the heart, or thyroid disorders, as well as nervous disorders should be clarified by a specialist.

.

OVERCOMING PANIC ATTACKS

.

Unless there are physical causes, a panic attack is an exaggerated stress reaction. This puts you in a vicious circle of anxiety, because your feelings of anxiety trigger physical symptoms, which in turn intensify the anxiety. Methods from behavioral therapy, breathing and relaxation exercises, but also uncovering the causes of anxiety help to gradually get panic attacks under control.

Of course, the goal of therapy is to prevent the occurrence of panic attacks. Therefore, I help you work through the original trauma. I have also often found in my psychotherapeutic practice that the attacks continue after the physical causes have been resolved. They are based on expectation. Your psyche has to learn that the trigger is no longer there.

Your questions about panic attacks

.

You can make your psyche more resilient to stress through adequate sleep, a healthy diet and exercise. Also avoid alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and drugs.

The attacks are unpleasant, but not dangerous. Don’t resist it, just know that the panic will pass and you will get through it. The more you fight a panic attack, the worse it gets.

Control your breathing. Inhale through your nose for a count of 4. Hold your breath for a count of 7. Then exhale through your mouth for a count of 8. It also helps to realize that this is a is a panic attack that will pass.
